A taste of today´s technology

The ABCs of new IT

T

I have been a technology buyer for enough years to know that the current emerging technologies and their relative levels of maturity are a big deal.  And they are a deal I am not sure I fully understand.  But I want to.  These technologies will profoundly affect the place I work, the job I do, and the world in which I live.  If I am spared, I can expect to live to 100.  That means I have as many years ahead of me as I do behind me.

The future in which I will grow old will be populated with this tech:

  • Will I be cared for by a robot?
  • Will my wearable health device alert my carers if I am sick?
  • Will technical fabrics assist me to stand straighter, walk more, bleed less?

The world I live in too:

  • Who will have access to my personal data?
  • Will I be more vulnerable to theft, smart-home invasions, car-hack/jackings?
  • Who is policing the police?

And the job I do.  Which is buying.  Of technology.

  • Will we bet on the right protocols?
  • Will the companies we buy from still be here tomorrow?
  • Are we being sold fact or fiction?  Is is snake oil or salvation?

But I need to go back to basics to understand this.  Too much has changed.  This blog is my attempt to make sense of emerging technology.  To understand what it is.  Why that matters.  How I can do my job better.   How I can live in a world where everything will shift.

I buy technology. I am curious about how technology has changed, and its impact in the workplace and upon society. I also like street art. And dachshunds. Especially dachshunds.
