I came across a quote yesterday that is attributed to Lao Tzu, the ca 5 BCE scholar.
I was attracted to its undeniable poetry and its irrefutable logic.
There was a rhythm and a cadence to the quote about the inevitability with which one can wander down a particular path and thereby arrive at a particular outcome, whether consciously or not. It is both a cautionary and a revelatory statement.
Today, as the Gregorian calendar year of 2017 draws to a close, I was privileged to spend its final day with lovely people, in a beautiful location, surrounded by snow-covered mountains and the bluest of blue skies above. We, together, put one foot in front of another, chatted the entire journey, and then we were at the top, with views that chocolate box covers covet. My actions determined this. My reflections, as I did so, was that I had started a few other actions this year in which the putting of metaphorical foot down, with determination, was the objective. Just keep plodding. I now have a small body of these footprints to look back upon.
And it’s a trail of which I rather like the look: I have over 300 little drawings that I have done, and today I will post my 106th blog.
I am not crossing any finishing lines and I do not have a group of cheering supporters. But the journey so far has been incredibly rewarding. My hope for my next Gregorian sashay is that I continue to be able to put one foot in front of the next in every action I choose to deliberately take. I am watching what I think, and how I turn this into the actions I wish to look back upon when I reach the pinnacle of my existence. Happy new year folks!
Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
