A taste of today´s technology

Unhelpful helping

Another report from the WEF this week (in conjunction with Accenture), this time in the impact of various macro and industry trends upon production industries such as automotive and chemicals.  A lot of doom is being forecast about geographies that will be affected.

The macro trends are increased demand for products available locally (shorter supply chains), demand becoming more concentrated (increased urbanisation), a rise in protectionism (see you later, NAFTA), and a increased move towards more sustainable production.  Industry trends are increased automation, product simplification, increased demand for customised products, work virtualisation (rise of the robots), and… wait for it… the rise of SERVITIZATION!!!

Servitization is absolutely NOT A WORD!!  This is the kind of jargon that makes me very grumpy.  Whilst I understand we are moving into more of a service economy, this kind of balderdash is unhelpful in an article prognosticating how we all need to stop being low skilled workers and hustle our way into the service economy.  Not. Helpful. At. All.  What this term is supposed to mean is the increased use of the xAAS approach to pretty much everything.  There are many words we could coin or adapt to describe this migration from product led to service led commercial models, but servitization is an ugly one.
